WCAG Contrast Explained
WCAG defines two conformance levels. AA is the widely-adopted baseline, requiring a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. AAA is the stricter target, requiring 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text.
Text counts as “large” when it is at least 18pt (24px), or 14pt (18.66px) when bold. Larger type is easier to read, so it is held to a lower contrast threshold than body copy.
